The process of jewellery making is no less than a magic! This entire process of the jewellery designing involves lots of steps like designing, model making to the final step of quality check. The initial step revolves around the creation of a design. This is where the jewelry designer breathes life into their vision, meticulously evaluating and analyzing the idea until it takes shape and transforms into a tangible reality
Following the design phase, we enter the realm of CAD/CAM technology. This stage employs advanced computer-aided design software to enhance the accuracy and quality of the design. It also facilitates the creation of a comprehensive manufacturing database.
The fourth stage involves the pivotal role of rubber molds in the production process. These molds play a crucial part in creating multiple replicas of the same exquisite design. The beauty of rubber molds lies in their ability to safeguard and encapsulate the intricate designs, ensuring they can be utilized to recreate the jewelry pieces in the future. Molds can be made from a variety of materials such as natural rubber, silicone, or even metal, and the molding process is known as “Vulcanizing.”
Progressing further, we arrive at the complex stage of casting, a pinnacle of jewelry manufacturing. Casting requires experienced and skilled casters who meticulously execute this intricate process. It involves placing the wax tree in a steel flask and pouring slurry of chemical powder over it, which solidifies within an hour. The flask is then heated in an electric furnace, causing the wax to melt and leaving behind a tree-shaped cavity. Molten metal is then poured into the flask and allowed to cool. Once cooled, the metal is carefully extracted, revealing the jewelry in its cast form.
Filing marks the next step in the jewelry manufacturing process. It involves removing excess metal or solder from the piece. Craftsmen employ various tools such as files and burns to meticulously eliminate the casting layer, ensuring a seamless finish. After filing, the process of assembly begins, where multiple components of the same design are joined using soldering or laser techniques. Following assembly, the jewelry piece undergoes thorough polishing, enhancing its elegance and value. This polishing stage consists of three steps: tumbling, pre-polishing, and ultra cleaning. It’s essential to note that jewelry pieces adorned with diamonds undergo pre-polishing since the diamonds cannot be polished once they are set. Polishing them beforehand preserves their radiant shine.
Our journey continues with the production of wax pieces, a key element in jewelry manufacturing. These wax pieces are created using rubber molds made from the silver master. The process involves placing the rubber mold in a commercial wax injector machine, where the wax is precisely injected into the cavity to form wax models. These wax models serve as the foundation for the subsequent casting process. The wax pieces are then skillfully assembled on a wax stem, a process known as “treeing.” Each wax piece is attached to a sprue, forming an angle of approximately 45 degrees with the stem. Lighter items are placed at the top, while heavier ones find their place at the bottom of the wax stem.
Metal setting is the ninth stage in the jewelry manufacturing process, representing the delicate art of attaching gemstones to the jewelry piece. Different metal setting techniques are employed to create captivating designs. Combinations of various metal settings are often used to enhance the allure of the jewelry piece. The extensive range of setting options includes prong, plate prong, pave, bezel, pressure, bead, flush, invisible, fishtail, miracle plate, and channel settings.
The polishing stage, the crowning glory of jewelry production, imparts a stunning gleam to the jewelry. This final stage ensures that the jewelry achieves its utmost brilliance. Polishing can be carried out through meticulous manual techniques or with the aid of advanced machinery. Craftsmen employ an array of tools, including soft buff, solid buff, hair buff, single line ball buff, coin buff, platinum polishing rouse, red and green rouse (to enhance shine), black lustre (for removing casting or filling layers), and white lustre (to eliminate roughness)
Next comes the art of model making, a stage that encompasses the transformation of a resin output from the CAM process into a silver model. This master design serves as a template to create multiple pieces of jewelry using rubber molds and casting technique.
Grinding takes center stage in the subsequent phase of jewelry manufacturing. Here, a polisher skillfully removes the nub, the residual part left after the casting process, where the raw casting was clipped off from the casting tree. By utilizing a motorized grinding machine, the polisher expertly smoothens the surface of the gold piece, giving it the desired finish. This stage culminates in the final polishing process, where the jewelry piece is held against a spinning grinding wheel, resulting in a flawlessly smooth surface.
